Bunkulung

Bunkulung is an offbeat paradise that is located just 15 km from Mirik surrounded by rivers and hills. A perfect Himalayan village with paddy fields and green millet spread over the slopes of mountains and water tanks for trout farming with rivers like Murmah Khola and Balasun crisscrossing the village make it a perfect place for tourists and travelers to calm their tired soul.

One of the best examples of ecotourism in North Bengal is Bunkulung. The locals grow a variety of vegetables and fruits which are of high quality. The beauty of Bunkulung is enhanced by the ponds of the sericulture project which is maintained by the Govt. of West Bengal. In this region use of any toxic materials or chemical fertilizers is strictly prohibited.

The locals of the village are mostly Limbus of the Gorkha Community. The beautiful name of this village is also a result of the combination of Lepcha and Limbu language.

You can also visit the famous Bokar Monastery in Mirik and Rangbang’s orange orchards. All these places can be covered by tourists and travelers on a day trip.

How to reach: 

From Siliguri, Bunkulung is 48 km away. The nearest railway station from Bunkulung is NJP (New Jalpaiguri Railway Station). Tourists can hire a car from NJP to Bunkulung which reaches the destination via Siliguri-Mirik Highway and takes around 2 hours to reach Bunkulung village.

The nearest Airport from Bunkulung is Bagdogra Airport and tourists can hire Car straightway from the airport to reach Bunkulung village. It will take them around 2.5 hours to reach Bunkulung.

Tourists staying in Mirik or Darjeeling and are willing to stay here can hire a car from Mirik/Darjeeling or can ask the hotel or homestay to arrange one for them. Bunkulung is 15 km away from Mirik town.

Best time to visit: 

Tourists can visit the place throughout the year. During Rainy Season, the whole village is covered in green and has a different beauty during this time of the year.

During the winter season, when it’s time for the paddy and millet to ripe, the mountain slopes turn into beautiful golden brown.

March and April are the peak season to visit Bunkulung.

Most of the homestays in Bunkulung have spacious and clean rooms with all modern facilities like Geyser, Television, lawn, and sit-out arrangements.
